Garage Door Efficiency
-
The DASMA program regulates garage doors and is transitioning to a new approach for measuring efficiency. U-Factor is now the standard for garage door insulation, and here's a breakdown of what that means.
What is U-Factor?
-
U-Factor measures how well a material insulates against heat loss. The lower the U-Factor, the better it keeps heat inside. It’s important for energy efficiency, as a lower U-Factor means less heat escapes.
-
For garage doors, U-Factor shows how well a door prevents heat loss. Insulated doors, like those with polystyrene or polyurethane, have a lower U-Factor, helping to keep your garage warmer and saving energy. Non-insulated doors have a higher U-Factor, meaning they allow more heat to escape.
-
When selecting a garage door, a lower U-Factor means better insulation and energy efficiency, especially if your garage is attached to your home or used frequently.
U-Factor or R-Value?
Tested U-Factor
-
U-Factor tests the whole installed assembly which includes section joint, lites, stile attachment, etc - more relevant to thermal performance.
-
Third party tested and validated by the program administrator
-
Tests measure the actual heat/energy transfer
-
All manufacturer results will be a direct comparison to one another
Calculated R-Value
-
Only one section is calculated and provides the insulating effect through the "center" of a door section only, not the entire door.
-
Independently calculated by each manufacturer - not validated.
-
No testing standard resulting in a wide interpretation of the calculation
-
Calculates the resistance to thermal transfer.

How does this benefit you?
U-Factor is often more beneficial than R-Value for customers because it provides a more accurate measure of a material's ability to prevent heat transfer, which directly impacts energy efficiency in real-world conditions. Additionally, U-Factor is more strictly regulated by the DASMA (Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association), ensuring a consistent standard for garage door performance.
Here’s why U-Factor matters more:
-
Real-World Performance: U-Factor measures the actual heat loss across the entire surface of a material, accounting for both insulation and the material's ability to block heat. In contrast, R-Value only measures insulation resistance, which doesn’t consider other factors like door construction or material types.
-
Broader Temperature Range: U-Factor is more reliable across various temperatures and conditions, giving a better overall picture of how a door will perform year-round, regardless of weather.
-
Comprehensive Evaluation: U-Factor looks at all the layers of the door, including insulation, metal, and seals, providing a more complete understanding of its energy efficiency.
-
Regulated by DASMA: U-Factor is the standard regulated by DASMA, ensuring that garage doors meet consistent performance criteria for insulation and energy efficiency. This makes it a more trusted measure for customers who want reliable, energy-saving products.
For customers, focusing on U-Factor ensures they are choosing a door that provides better insulation, reduces energy costs, and meets regulated standards for long-term efficiency.
Garage Door Tracks
At Mcleod County Garage Doors, we pride ourselves on being your trusted source for high-quality garage door solutions. Choosing the correct track system for your garage door is essential to enhance your overall experience and functionality. Our knowledgeable team is always available to provide guidance and ensure you select the best track system tailored to your needs. We recommend consulting with our professionals to make informed decisions and achieve optimal results for your garage.

Standard Track
Standard radius garage door track. The most popular standard radius track is a 15” radius, which requires 15” of headroom to accommodate the curve of the track and all other track components/equipment. Other standard radius options include 20” and 32” radii but the larger the radius, the larger the headroom required to accommodate the curve. While the logic here may imply that installing a track with a radius that is lower than 15″ is ideal because it takes up even less headroom, we prefer to avoid using a 12” radius track because it requires additional work from the operator motor to move door sections through that small of a curve. Remember this is a balancing act to select the best hardware for your door as well as the best coordinating motor for efficient door operation.

Low Headroom Track
Low headroom garage door track. This very common garage door track option uses up even less headroom space than a 12” radius track. Often referred to as Dual-Track, it is best recognized by a second horizontal track. This second track is installed above the horizontal section that is attached to the curve from the vertical track section. This second track is used for moving the top section of the door only, allowing the operator to easily move the top section far enough that the lower sections will follow on the lower track smoothly. This garage door track option also helps with doors that might have taller or oversized top sections.
Hi-Lift Track

This option is a variation of Standard Radius track and is used in situations where the ceiling in a garage is significantly taller than in a typical home. This option utilizes a standard radius curve but includes more vertical track and less horizontal track to move the door out of the opening. Less of the door rests in a horizontal position and more of the door stays vertical when the door is open.
